Project Updates for Week 5 to Week 6

Week 5
Date: Thursday, 11th Sept, 08
Theme: Discussions with Roshan

During these two weeks, we mainly focus on finding for materials which can change their colours under different conditions. Here, I have summerized the materials and their influential factors in the table below.

Colour-Changing Materials

Influential Factors

Photochromic

light

Thermochromic

heat

Electrochromic

electrical current

Solvatochromic

solvent polarity

Ionochromic

ions

Halochromic

pH

Tribochromic

mechanical friction

Piezochromic

pressure

By comparing the feasibility of each material, we realize that in the next step, we can carry on our research to electrochromic materials, since its colour change can be stimulated by electrical current most easily. Another alternative way is to look into thermochromic materials which has been done much research in the past years. However, as Prof told us before, the cooling of thermochromic materials cannot be done as easily as its heating. Hence, we shall leave it as our last choice.

Next, we shall focus more on electrochromic materials, such as how and where to purchase its dyes(if possible), whether there is any applications and its feasibility in supporting our project.

Week 6
Date: Monday, 15th Sept, 08
Theme: Discussions with Roshan

After the discussion, we realize that electrochromic materials hardly exist in dye form, meaning we could hardly embed the material onto textiles. The current applications using electrochromism includes smart windows and smart lenses. However, to apply the material to fabrics is still a challenge for us now.
